In much the same way that many websites used shared hosting or low end dedicated servers in the past, public cloud computing can be a cost effective way to host simple websites.
Most websites have hundreds of visitors a day or less and don’t require high performance servers to meet their user demand. In addition, most of websites don’t contain proprietary or company confidential information that needs to be secured, or compliant with corporate or regulatory requirements.
Because the public cloud can offer tiny compute slices that are required to run a web server and rarely use the entire computing platform of a hardware-based server, the public cloud can offer a very cost effective solution for stand-alone web hosting.
On the other hand, the website is the front end of a more complex application such as e-commerce, electronic medical records, or other Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), then the website can be a small server inside the private cloud that is designed to meet the security, performance and compliance requirement of the more complex application.
