So what is “World IPv6 Day?”

On June 8th, 2011, participants (including Online Tech) will be enabling their websites for 24 hours to IPv6. The main goal of this event is to motivate organizations, ISPs, hardware makers, and web companies to begin preparing their services for IPv6.
As the Internet is slowly running out of IPv4 Addresses, a new address system was developed in order to not only keep up with the demand of consumers needing more addresses, but to help build larger and more efficient networks. IPv6 provides many benefits, including:
- Better Performance - In IPv6, the packets and headers of the packets have been formed differently, resulting in less dropped or lost packets and better reliability.
- Better Security - IPsec, which was optional in IPv4, will be mandatory in IPv6, providing encryption and authentication on each packet, resulting in less malicious attacks.
- Backwards-Compatibility with IPv4 - IPv6 will be backwards-compatible with IPv4, which will help in slowly making the transition to just IPv6, which may take 10-15 years to be fully implemented.
