Sylectus - A Software-as-a-Service Hosting and IT Disaster Recovery Case Study

THE CHALLENGE

The biggest challenge Sylectus faced was having a reliable data center supported by excellent customer technical support. With over 400 transportation carriers using Sylectus’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) software, they needed a datacenter that could offer high availability for their IT disaster recovery solution. Other requirements for their data center included a secure, top-notch facility that had 24X7 access and excellent customer technical support.

THE SOLUTION

Sylectus utilizes Online Tech’s colocation services for real-time, online server backup and creating an IT disaster recovery site for their facilities in Windsor, Ontario. Sylectus pushes backup data of their transactions every minute to Online Tech’s Ann Arbor, Mich. data center facility.

Although Online Tech’s Midwest data centers are physically farther than their old backup facility, Sylectus felt it was worth the change. “The further separation we have between our data centers reduces the risk of a major disaster knocking out both locations. Our customers gain a certain comfort level knowing their data is available and accessible, in real time, at any time from either location,” says Ed de Leon, Sylectus VP of Information Technology.

According to de Leon, it has proven to be a good decision because of the improved technical support and uptime server performance. “Online Tech is exceeding our demands. We have seen no increase in our monthly costs compared to our previous provider, but have received much better service and support,” states de Leon.

An example of this support includes a time when they had a server that needed to be restarted remotely. At that time, Sylectus did not have the capability to do it from their headquarters. They contacted Online Tech’s technical team, and within minutes restarted the server. This saved Sylectus close to an hour’s driving time. “It is really comforting to know that we can just give Online Tech a call and right away they can help us,” says de Leon. “Online Tech is going to be a part of our strategy moving forward. We know that they can support and grow with us as our needs change.” Online Tech also offers remote power strip reboot to their clients through their real-time, online server portal to save them from this type of hassle.
