That doesn’t mean that the Internet has stopped growing. To accommodate that growth, a new version of the Internet addressing system called IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is ready to go and it greatly expands the Internet space to 3.4 undecillion (340 x 1036) unique addresses. That’s equivalent to 50 octillion addresses for every man, woman and child living in the world today, which experts believe should support the Internet for centuries to come. An example of a IPv4 to IPv6 format change would be moving from 66.220.149.32 to 2620:0:1cfe:face:b00c:0:0:3.
The transition to the new Internet protocol is predicted to take place over the next several years. On June 8th, Online Tech will join Google, Facebook, and Yahoo for World IPv6 day, a 24 hour test of the new Internet protocol for major websites across the country. Online Tech will adopt IPv6 for its own website and services, and ensure that its data center and hosting clients are fully prepared for transition to the new Internet protocol as it gains momentum.
To help Michigan businesses prepare for the transition, Online Tech is hosting an IPv6 webinar on April 6th at 4pm EDT. The webinar will provide an overview of the transition and give businesses a step by step guide for preparation.
