When Genesys PHO began planning to move and upgrade their data center facilities, they had a decision to make. The building that their data center was located at was being sold. So, they needed to find a new location for their data center.
Their options were to build a new data center in one of their other buildings or colocate their servers with an outsourced data center operator. After careful analysis on the costs of building versus colocation and looking at a number of data centers in Michigan; Genesys PHO decided on colocation in Online Tech’s top tier Michigan data centers.
“We were able to upgrade our production IT environment to Online Tech’s data center and keep our disaster recovery solution the better of our two in-house data centers,” said Nate Buchholtz, IT Director for Genesys PHO. “With a direct network connection between the Online Tech and our in-house data center, we significantly increased the availability standards for both components of our IT strategy.”

With colocation at Online Tech, Genesys was able to upgrade to a Tier 3 data center with a fully redundant power and network infrastructure. Genesys chose Online Tech’s high availability power architecture with no single point of failure in the power delivery – assuring a very high level of server uptime.
Online Tech also delivers a HIPAA compliant data center with all of the physical and network security features required to assure that a medical health organization can comply with the HIPAA data privacy requirements.
“We made a careful financial analysis as we looked at building out a second data center or colocating with Online Tech,” said Paul Garson, CFO of Genesys PHO. “In our case, colocation was not only a more cost-effective solution, but it also provides us with a more robust data center and around-the-clock support from Online Tech should we ever need them.”
Once the decision to move was made, coordinating the move became the critical test. Since Genesys’ operation depends heavily on electronic medical records run from servers in the data center, the entire move needed to be completed between close of business on Friday and opening of business on Monday.
Online Tech was prepared to make the move as smooth as possible. Genesys’ data center cage was designed, laid out, with all of the power runs in place before the move. Online Tech also took on the network layout and pre-wired the network drops through a central patch panel to minimize installation time on the day of the move.
When the time came, the systems were turned down on a Friday at 5 p.m. The servers in the racks were unplugged and moved to the Online Tech data center intact and connected to the pre-wired network. The entire system came back online without a hitch by Sunday morning – leaving a healthy margin of time before the doctors needed to use the system Monday morning.
