As a result, the Medical Group Management Association is calling for an even longer extension of the implementation deadline, CMIO reported.
According to the news source, the MGMA believes organizations need at least another six months added to the extension for HIPAA version 5010 compliance. The initial relief was given earlier this month in response to the large number of companies not ready for the new rules.
Susan Turney, president and CEO of the MGMA-ACMPE, told the news source the current extension, which requires providers to submit a formal transition timeline, adds more red tape while also making it difficult for organizations that have to accept payments under the 4010 regulations.
"Our main concern is that the failure to implement version 5010 by the compliance date will impact payment to practices for the services they provide," Turney told CMIO.
The implementation of 5010 standards are not the only challenge emerging for healthcare organizations. The implementation of new healthcare IT systems are increasingly making it more difficult for companies to follow regulatory guidelines.
